2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza goes for the gold medal in sustainability

2023 begins and as a first New Year's resolution, the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza goes for the gold medal in sustainability, with the clear objective of becoming one of the most sustainable sporting events and also strive for the World Triathlon gold certificate on sustainability.

To do this, one of the most important pillars is to go to the 0 waste at the races. Whenever possible, the Ibiza World Triathlon Multisport Championships will use reusable products at the refreshment posts and at the finish line and will offer water refill fountains to replace the usual single-use cups made of cardboard or plastic bottles.

This action, which until now has not been done at other events, will not only promote the reduction of our environmental footprint, but will also help to integrate models based on the circular economy, as demanded by European directives and the European Commission and the Ley 8/2019, de 19 de febrero, de residuos y suelos contaminados de las Illes Balears. This Balearic regulation is currently one of the most pioneering legal frameworks in Europe and obliges sporting events to eliminate disposable products and offer non-packaged water.

Another key pillar of the sustainability strategy will be impact assessment. Environmental impact and carbon footprint will be assessed with the aim of identifying areas where work can and should be done to reduce or eliminate the impact, and where this is not possible, to determine how to compensate at the local level.

But the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships ibiza will not be a sustainable event without the collaboration of all its stakeholders. That is why the World Championships will launch an awareness-raising campaign before and during the event on sustainability practices for athletes, accompanying persons, staff and volunteers. It will also promote the hiring of local providers or as close as possible as well as selecting local, organic or fair trade products inviting new partners and sponsors who can work hand in hand with the Championships to achieve the World Triathlon gold certificate; all of them with a sustainable objective or positioning themselves in sustainability.

The Ibiza Multisport World Championship will be a sporting event that will bring value, health and wealth not only on an economic level but also on a social and environmental level. And all in an outstanding and paradisiacal place such as the Isle of Ibiza.
