The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has announced that Ibiza will host the first edition of the PTO European Open on May 6th as part of its PTO Tour 2023 calendar.

The PTO European Open will feature a women's race and a men's race of 100km in its entirety (2km swim, 80km bike and 18km run) taking place in Ibiza Town, with its idyllic backdrop and co-organised with the Ibiza 2023 Multisport Triathlon World Championships. Both races will be broadcast live around the world, thanks to the PTO Tour's partnership with Warner Bros, Discovery and their national and regional networks. In Spain it will be available on Eurosport.

"We are delighted to confirm that Ibiza will host the first PTO European Open, kicking off the PTO Tour 2023. It continues the expansion of the PTO Tour and our journey to different continents, courses and climates and will be a fantastic way to start the season," said Sam Renouf, PTO CEO.

The experience for the athlete will be unique as the circuit will pass through the most iconic places on the island. The swim will take place at Figueretas Beach, with the traditional route of the triathlon events in Ibiza. After finishing the swim, the athletes will enter the transition area to start the bike ride towards San Antonio, with a route of several laps to return to Figueretas Beach, where they will start, after the second transition, the foot race. This will consist of a first part that will take the athletes to the finishing area in the Port of Ibiza, and from there they will begin the laps that will take them to the area of the city that is a World Heritage Site. An exciting route that will show the whole city with the finish line in the Plaza del Martillo, in the heart of Ibiza.

"In the Spanish Triathlon Federation we are very pleased with this agreement that will allow PTO to hold in our country, in Ibiza, one of the events of its calendar that extends worldwide," said José Hidalgo, president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation. "We believe that this type of alliance also serves to make triathlon bigger.

In addition, Hidalgo stressed that "Spain has always been a pioneering country and we have always believed that the association of all the players and organisers of this sport is essential to make it bigger and more important. This agreement, with the celebration in Ibiza of one of the PTO tour events is undoubtedly in that line. In short, it is great news for world triathlon and great news for Spanish triathlon".

World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado was also in agreement with Fetri: "After last year's great experience at Samorin, we are delighted to partner again with PTO to work together on an event that will be a great spectacle for all athletes and spectators, as well as for Ibiza and the island. The partnership with PTO is a natural for us, and it will be great to see many of the world's best long distance triathletes in action in this type of combined event, offering athletes multiple opportunities to compete. We are ready to offer all athletes the best possible experience and make Ibiza an unforgettable event for everyone.

One of the world's top triathletes who will not miss the event will be Jan Frodeno, who commented: "I am delighted to announce that my first PTO Open race will be the new PTO European Open in Ibiza and it will definitely be a fantastic race in a great setting like Ibiza".

And of course the Spanish triathletes were also very happy with the news that Ibiza will host the PTO European Open. "First time in Europe and first time at home. I'm sure it will be an incredible experience and a unique opportunity for all the Spanish fans to see live the best long distance triathletes in the world", said Pablo Dapena, while for Sara Pérez Sala "that a race of the level of the PTO is in Ibiza is a real blast. It will be running at home with a public devoted to the Spaniards who compete and in which there will surely be a lot of people cheering. Personally I'm very excited because it's a trip close to home, a place I've wanted to visit for a long time and a place where I hope to spend a few weeks training to familiarise myself with the circuits and prepare for the race".

The 2023 PTO Tour will kick off in Ibiza on 6 May with the inaugural PTO European Open before heading to Milwaukee on 4-5 August for the PTO US Open and then Singapore for the first ever PTO Asian Open on 19-20 August.
